Civilized Discourse Construction Kit, Inc. (“CDCK”) owns and operates Discourse.org, an open source discussion platform, (“Platform”). Clients license our Platform and in some cases, we may host the discussion forum for their website visitors.
Creating An Account
When you create a discussion forum account, you will be asked to enter your name and an e-mail address. We will send you a confirmation email verifying the account. We record the IP address used when you register for an account. We use this to ensure that user accounts are legitimately created by a human and not by script.
You may also log into the site with a social media account. When you do, we will import the email associated with that social media account into your Discourse.org account. Any additional information they send us will be deleted. We need your email to notify you of activity occurring in your account. You may change your email in user preferences.
Browsing The Site
You may browse the site without an account. We record the IP address of every request to our server, whether you are logged in or not. If you are logged in, we will associate this activity with your account.
Users may export user content -- including your content -- that was created on Discourse.org to their email or other social media platform.
Automated Log Data
The servers that run our platform create standard log files about your activity on the forum. These logs record visitor activity and information about your device, such as what browser you’re running, and what pages you access. This information helps us diagnose server and software errors, and in cases of abuse, track and mitigate the abuse.
We Use A Session Cookie
Cookies are small files that a site or its service provider transfers to your computer's hard drive through your browser. These cookies enable the site to recognize your browser and, if you have a registered account, associate it with your registered account. We use a session cookie to remember you when you login, so that when you return, you do not need to login again.
How do we protect your information?
We implement a variety of commercially reasonable security measures designed to maintain the safety of your personal information. However we can not and do not guarantee the security of your data so keep this in mind as you participate in the forum.
What is your data retention policy?
When you delete user content, it is removed from public view, but remains available on the server indefinitely. To request that an account be deleted, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
With regards to IP addresses, we make a good faith effort to:
- Retain server logs containing the IP address of all requests to that server for no more than 90 days.
- Retain the IP address used to create the account for no more than 5 years.
- Data may remain on back-up servers until it is overwritten.
Do we disclose any information to outside parties?
What if we receive a request from law enforcement?Unless we are legally prevented to do so, it is our policy to forward any legal requests for user data to the Discussion Forum owner, to respond to according to their policies.
What if there is a change in control at Discourse.org?
